I’m welcoming the chillier days (partly because Fall is my favourite time of the year and also we don’t have air conditioning in our home!). As I plan my Fall / Winter knit pipeline – yes, it is a pipeline as I have so many items I want to knit and too little time – I always think of that “palette cleanser” knit for the in between makes that are a bit trickier and you need a break.
One of my “ol faithfuls” that I absolutely adore (and it shows in numbers) is the Simple Sweater by Tin Can Knits. If you haven’t made this top down yoked sweater, it’s time to consider. This is by far one of the best sweater patterns for a) multiple weight options; b) customizing; c) sizing that is size inclusive and d) fit. It does not disappoint offering a gender neutral design, 3 yarn weights (sock / dk / worsted) and sizing from newborn to 6XL.
This pattern is perfect any skill level from beginner to expert. And it is a closet staple. Simple and elegant and something you can completely make your own.
So I’ve made multiples and each one is a little different.
Let’s look at the ones I made for me and how I’ve customized the pattern…
- My first one I wanted to make it a bit more colourful so decided to do a self striped yoke using Yarn Therapist Self-Striping Sweater Yoke and Cascade 220 Superwash (light blue sweater) in worsted weight
- I wanted a more “fall / spring” version so made one in Leo & Roxy’s worsted (morning glory) and Yarn Therapist’s striping sweater yoke. I shorted the sleeves to make a tee – a game changer for me. Loved it!
- I was on a striped yoke kick or bandwagon and fell in love with another colourway of Yarn Therapist self striping and made one that reminds we of autumn in Canada.
- Just so I have a bit of variety in life, I decided that enough of making striped yokes, I need to make a PIXEL one. Have you seen GingerSnapThat’s pixel sweater (or sock) kits? I knew I needed one in short sleeves in my life. I am still amazing HOW this was dyed to look so pixely (is that a word?) good. This one is in fingering weight.
I’ve made two for my daughter:
- one is a self striped yoke (using Yarn Therapist Self-Striping Sweater Yoke and Cascade 220 Superwash)
- and the other is striped in Cascade 220 Superwash
Just so my hubby didn’t have FOMO, I made him one for Christmas in Cascade 220 Heathers. He wears it all the time (in winter).
I am all about this pattern – even have my mum on the bandwagon and she has already knitted a striped yoke one for herself and is on sleeve island (she prefers long sleeves) with her second. Amazing.
Long story short, this is an awesome pattern. You can create so many looks – change the sleeve length, make it regular or cropped body, stripe it or keep it one colour. The adventure is yours. But one thing for certain, this is a knit you will reach for time and time again.
