January is always an interesting month. It begins with coming off the high of the holiday season that brings a sluggishness and haziness to our existence and as an opposing force, it reignites energy with the excitement of a new year and new beginnings.
This is a time when I always intend to do a “make 9” list or a “year in review” on Instagram but never ever get to it. I see everyone’s and I get envious. It is a time of year though, when I think about what I have made, what in my stash and what I want to make this year. Each year I state with conviction “I will not buy any more yarn and use what’s in my stash”. With each new year (and the fact that designers typically have a timely pattern sale) my wish list of makes grows….and so does my stash.
If you know me, you will know that I’m a test knitter. There was a time when I was a test knitter on steroids (figuratively not literally). I would swear to my husband and knitting friends that “this is the last one” only to be met with rolling eyes or “yeah sure Tara”. And of course, I would buckle. And I usually would buckle when Tif Neilan has a testing call as I love her designs.
On January 22nd, Tif released her next pattern. This one was a bit different for all of us test knitters, as it was a SECRET one. Meaning no social media updates until it’s released. So I’ve been bursting to share.
Welcome Ebbs and Flows Raglan by Tif Neilan.
This pullover is worked top down in the round with a raglan construction. It encompasses Tif’s signature multi colourwork (but only two colours at a time) and of course her notorious herringbone stitch cuffs (you can also choose to knit twisted rib instead). The design features mosaic colourwork on the hem and cuffs.
Using 5 mm needles and light worsted weight yarn in three colourways, this knits up dreamingly fast. And bonus, you can look at your stash to pull together a beautiful compilation for the colourwork as it doesn’t require a lot of yarn.
This is a great pattern for a knitter who wants to try colourwork and different stitch techniques. For the avid knitter, this is a fun pullover to make. And it’s a fabulous fit with the length just hitting at the high hip. Perfect to dress up or down. I have worn this make on a few work Teams calls and got many compliments when colleagues saw the cuffs.
I really wanted this garment to drape and the colour to be bold and “pop”, and working with Gillian, we found the perfect combo in Malabrigo Rios – Main colour Reflecting Pool and colourwork is done in Lettuce and Magenta.
This make of happiness will help with those January blues!
Pop in to the shop or reach out to the Little Red Mitten team to help find the perfect colour combination for you.
Tara this is a beautiful sweater with all my favourite colours. Thank you for sharing
