Getting to Know our Teachers: Sharon

In honour of the back-to-school theme, we’re highlighting some of our own teachers here at Little Red Mitten, where passion for fibre arts comes to life through expert guidance and a love for creativity. First up is Sharon, who has been part of our team for 11 years. A knitter and crocheter, she adores vibrant yarns and helping students achieve their “aha” moments. Sharon’s warm teaching style and extensive experience make her an invaluable part of our community.

Read on to discover some fun “get to know you” questions, followed by a deeper dive into what inspires Sharon to teach and share her love for fibre arts.

Interview

When did you join our team at LRM?
I actually joined the team 11 years ago as a sales associate.  Started teaching 6 years ago.

Knitter or Crocheter?
Both - depends on the project

What’s your favourite yarn?
Koigu /  Malabrigo / Leo & Roxy

Favourite Weight/Fibre?
Sock/fingering

What’s your favourite colour(s)?
Fall colours and/or bright jewel-tone colours

What is your favourite item to make?
Sweaters/cardigans

What are you currently working on? What are you planning to cast on?
I am currently working on “Martha”, a Rowan cardigan pattern in Noro Silk Garden Sock.

Cast on plans?
I am converting a pullover crochet pattern to a cardigan - that’s what is being started.  Hopefully in Leo & Roxy Yarn Co. or Malabrigo.

What handmade item do you always reach for?
Winter - Zweig (knitted); Summer - Barbados Tee (crocheted)

Describe your ideal day.
Beautiful sunshine, cool breeze, coffee and knitting on the front porch.  Knitting on the beach in a lounger is also pretty decadent.

Teaching Questions

How did you first discover Little Red Mitten? What drew you to our shop?
A new yarn shop is hard to resist.  The inventory and the people drew me in and have kept me coming back.

What inspired you to start teaching? Was there a specific moment or experience that made you want to share your skills with others?
I was asked by Jolyn to teach and I didn’t resist the call.  I love helping others learn these time honoured skills.

What’s your favourite part about teaching at Little Red Mitten? Are there any memorable moments or student experiences that stand out to you?
When the “oh I got it, I can do this” moment happens with a student it’s absolutely wonderful.  Sometimes all it takes is explaining why you do what you do.

Do you have a favourite technique or type of project to teach? Why is it your favourite?
Mitered Squares - I love the way it looks and the way it is created.  Once the class is over, the students love it too!  (Psst...there is a calss coming up! Book it now.)

What’s your go-to knitting/crochet (or other craft) project when you’re crafting for fun? Any favourite yarns or patterns?
Leo and Roxy have some fabulous sock/fingering colourways and I love playing with those to see how different they appear when knit and crocheted.

When you’re not knitting, crocheting or teaching, what other hobbies or interests do you enjoy?
Classic car shows with my husband is my summer hobby and grandchildren are a year-around enjoyment.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in crochet?
Be patient - you can do this.  It’s not difficult - you just need to wrap your head and your fingers around the technique!

Is there a particular class or topic you’d love to teach in the future that you haven’t had the chance to yet?
Would love to teach textured crochet - cables and multiple stitches that would enhance your project and raise it to the next level.

How do you stay inspired and keep your skills sharp as a teacher? Do you have any favourite resources or mentors you turn to?
Attending knitting/crochet retreats and taking classes to learn new tips and tricks.  I try to change things up every once in a while but keeping the basics intact.  I turn to Jolyn for help and inspiration.

What’s one thing people might be surprised to learn about you?
I invited Jolyn to her first dyeing class and now she is the awesome and inspiring mind behind Leo and Roxy.  Very proud of her and all she has accomplished.
