Get to Know our Team Members: Jolyn

Our team is amazing and whether you come in to see us or are part of our virtual community, we want you to get to know us better.

Life is unpredictable - You get what you get and you don’t get upset. (psst - could this be a mystery box reference or something about gauge?)

So let’s introduce our queen bee, the person behind it all wearing so many hats being as cool as a cucumber and whose smile and energy lights up a room.  She is a genius working through patterns, can fix mistakes within minutes (some would say milliseconds) and is the ultimate colour mastermind - not only pulling together unique combinations but dyeing beautiful colourways. She is the owner of Little Red Mitten, the sole proprieter of Leo & Roxy and loves Harry Potter. Her creativity, quirkiness and innovative ideas are contagious.

Most days you can see her walking on the floor adorned in bold colours and wearing some fancy footwear – most likely one of her many Fluevogs – Jolyn  Gardner. Read Jolyn’s interview below...She has some interesting answers!

Interview

Jolyn, when did you join our team at LRM?

In September 2009

Knitter or Crocheter?
Knitter with a capital K and crocheter with a small c.

What’s your favourite yarn?
Malabrigo Worsted, then Lambs Pride…

(Do we carry either of those? No, not at the moment, but we know someone with some pull, so you never know.)

Favourite Weight/Fibre?
Non-superwash wool is my favourite. For knitting, worsted is great but I want fingering weight sweaters, so Noelle makes them for me. Thanks Noelle! So essentially, I knit worsted weight and wear fingering weight - a bit of a conundrum.

For Dyeing, I want to dye on superwash, but work/knit with non-superwash....another conundrum!

What’s your favourite colour(s)?
Orange and Pink, pink and orange and coral which is orange and pink combined.

What is your favourite item to make?
A mess, but that’s not an item. I don't know, I do wips! Then end.

What are you currently working on?
Ha! Top secret, no one's allowed to know.

(Jig is up Jolyn - if you watch our podcast you can see some of the things she's currently working on).

Cast on plans?
Everything!! I’d love to do a colourblocked pullover.

What handmade item do you always reach for?
Nothing, except Gillian’s Penguono.

Describe your ideal day.
...when you ask AI to write your ideal day…

Your ideal day starts with waking up to a breakfast that magically cooks itself, followed by a commute on a hoverboard with a soundtrack provided by a live mariachi band. Your workplace has a "bring your pet to work" policy, and your job title is officially "Chief Fun Officer." Lunch involves a surprise visit from a famous chef who whips up your favorite dish, and your afternoon meetings are replaced by a spontaneous dance party. The day ends with a personalized comedy show featuring your favourite comedians, and you drift off to sleep on a cloud-shaped bed surrounded by floating puppies.

...but then ask it to make it yarn related….

Absolutely! Your ideal day begins with waking up to the aroma of freshly brewed yarn-scented coffee, and you head to your job at the yarn store where every customer is a knitting prodigy. Commuting involves riding a yarn-covered bicycle, and your workplace has a "bring your pet sheep to work" policy. Lunch features a surprise visit from a famous yarn spinner who teaches everyone a new knitting technique. Afternoon meetings are replaced by a spontaneous knitting circle, and the day ends with a personalized comedy show featuring yarn-related jokes. You drift off to sleep on a bed of cozy, hand-knit blankets surrounded by floating yarn balls.

(btw we love how she integrates technology advances with yarn).

Ah shucks, just as we were getting some good stuff, we have run out of time ;)

If you are local, come in to say Hi to Jolyn if she isn’t busy dyeing beautiful yarn upstairs.  She’s at Little Red Mitten all the days when our shop is open – Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.  You can also find her at most of our knit nights – Fridays from 6 – 8 pm.
