I’m thinking about how cold my mom gets in the winter now that she’s in her eighties. She says she may go to the store and buy a hoodie – not really her style but it would keep her warm. I’m thinking she could do with a nice, handknit sweater. Her birthday is coming up in April, so…
There are so many sweater patterns on Ravelry! I want something comfortable, loose-fitting, long-sleeved, heavy enough to keep her warm but not so heavy that she can’t move around freely. I’ve narrowed my search to the three shown above. Each is available for purchase and has enough projects listed that I feel confident they will be well-written. Snowbird is simple and comfy. Sera is flattering and can easily be changed to incorporate long sleeves. But I think the winner is Portage for this round. It has an interesting waffle stitch pattern on the back and those lovely pockets!
Now for the yarn choice. It calls for a DK weight and has been knit in some lovely yarns available at Little Red Mitten: Madelinetosh Tosh DK, Malabrigo Arroyo, Rios and Rastita! It would also be nice in Ella Rae Lace Merino DK. But I’m looking for an easy-care yarn for my mom. Cascade 220 Superwash or Anchor Bay would work well but my choice is Rowan Pure Wool Superwash in the Hawthorn colour as it will bring out her hazel eyes!
