Classes

From beginners to experienced fibre enthusiasts, there is something for you at LITTLE RED MITTEN. Our expert teachers can help you learn to knit, weave, crochet, spin or dabble in other interesting fibre arts while you pick up plenty of tips and ideas to help with future projects. Our goal is to give you the skills and knowledge to help you make wise choices which result in pleasing and successful projects.

  • Pick-Up Weaving with Linda

    This class is the logical next step for new weavers! Learn to expand the possibilities of your loom by learning to use a pick-up stick (or two) to produce lacy weaves, windowpane, honeycomb, etc. Learn to read pick-up patterns and explore how to use warp and weft floats in creative ways.

    Please ask for loom set up directions ahead of the class.

    Prerequisites: Weaving 101

    Requirements: Loom with 7.5 dpi heddle, 2 colours of Sugar and Cream dishcloth cotton warped on your loom.

    Cost: $50 (students to supply materials)

    Let Jane show you how to add fun heels (and toes) to your socks. Kits for the class that include a sock tube and contrasting yarn for heels and toes are available for an additional $20.

    Class 1/3

    It’s something that every new knitter aspires to – knitting socks! You’ll learn all the steps to making simple yet lovely socks from casting on and how to hold your double pointed needles, to turning the heels and doing the Kitchener stitch to close your toes. Socks aren’t difficult, but there are lots of tricks and tips that make the experience fun and stress free!

    Prerequisites: very comfortable with casting on, knitting, purling and working in the round

    Cost: $100 (includes needles and yarn)

  • Intro to Cables with Angie

    If you love the look of cables but are intimidated to attempt them, let Angie soothe your fears. Explore a variety of cable types and techniques to add to your knitting skills.

    Prerequisites: basic knitting skills

    Please bring a set of 4.5mm needles (straight or circular), a cable needle, and worsted weight yarn to the class.

    Learn to warp your loom using two heddles to weave two layers at the same time. These can be two separate layers, two layers joined at one side to produce a fabric twice the width, or two layers joined at both sides to produce a tube (great for weaving bags). Project ideas, pattern for a hanging shuttle holder, and tips for successful double weave included.

    Requirements: Loom with double heddle attachment and two 10dpi heddles, 2 colours of 4/8 cotton.

    Prerequisites: comfortable with weaving techniques

  • Needle Felted Pendant/Bauble/Dryer Ball with Jane

    This cute pendant is as fun to make as it is to use and wear. Use it “as is” or add a few drops of essential oils. Use it as a fun zipper pull for your project bag. Alternatively, you can make a larger, simple ball and use it in the dryer as an alternative to fabric softener. Simply let your creativity run wild.

    Once you have mastered pick-up, learn how to plan and weave a project with the pick-up creating a pattern where you want it. Bring your loom warped and your pick-up sticks, and we will plan your pattern and get started weaving it.

    Requirements: Your loom warped to weave a scarf/ shawl/ table runner, a pick up stick long enough to accommodate the widest part of your pick-up pattern.

    Prerequisites: Weaving 101 or comfortable with weaving techniques and some experience weaving pick-up.
